De terroristische aanslagen op 11 september in New York en later die in Madrid, Londen, Parijs en Brussel; de genocides in nazi-Duitsland, Rwanda en Cambodja; de martelingen in dictatoriale regimes; de oorlogen in voormalig Joegoslavië, Syrië, Irak en momenteel in Oekraïne; het seksuele geweld in oorlogstijd, de bombardementen in Gaza zijn allemaal extreme vormen van massaal geweld waarvan we ons afvragen: wie doet zoiets? En waarom? Wie zijn deze mensen? In dit boek geeft Alette Smeulers antwoorden op bovengenoemde vragen. Zij heeft 30 jaar lang onderzoek gedaan naar daders van extreme vormen van massaal geweld, zoals oorlogsmisdrijven, misdrijven tegen de menselijkheid, genocide en terrorisme.

In het boek wordt een dadertypologie gepresenteerd met14 verschillende type daders worden onderscheiden. In ieder hoofdstuk staat een andere type dader centraal. Het boek combineert inzichten uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek met illustratieve casestudies. Het gaat daarbij om meestal zeer bekende daders als soms ook wat minder bekende daders: het gaat van dictators tot tussenpersonen, tot voetsoldaten en terroristen. Hun verhalen worden diepgaand onderzocht terwijl in het boek hun gedrag en motivatie wordt geduid. Perpetrators of mass atrocities (Routledge 2024) dat op 2 oktober ook in het Nederlands verschijnt onder de titel Angstaanjagend Normaal (Alfabet 2025) biedt een verhelderend inzicht in de oorzaken van extreem en massaal geweld. Kennis van daders is niet alleen van belang om de verschrikkelijke dingen die in de wereld gebeuren beter te begrijpen maar ook van belang om manieren te vinden om op een effectievere manier dergelijke misdrijven te voorkomen. Ook is het inzicht van belang om op een faire en adequate wijze de verwijtbaarheid van verschillende type daders te bepalen.
