An important aspect of the work of an academic is to visit and organize conferences, workshops and expert meetings. Alette Smeulers organized two expert meetings as part of her VENI research (a NWO scholarship granted to her in December 2005). One of the meetings was organized in Maastricht (2007) and the other in Amsterdam (2009). At these meetings international experts were invited on a two day expert meeting in which they presented papers and discussed their mutual research interests. In both cases a conference book was published.

In 2012 Stephan Parmentier (University of Leuven); Roelof Haveman (Law consultant) Rianne Letschert, Anne-Marie de Brouwer and Alette Smeulers (all from Tilburg University) founded the African Low Countries Network (ALCN) and organized the first meeting in March 2013 in Nyanza, Rwanda.

Next to these meetings Alette Smeulers has organized a number of workshops and meetings during national and international academic conferences, organized a number of research meetings and has given lectures in the Netherlands and abroad.
